About Mami Shimomura, Fine Art Painter
I have been selling real estates since 1987 and now I have another life, a Fine Art Painter.
Kyoto, the ancient Capital of Japan, is my birthplace and raised there. My artistic seeds are deeply rooted in my family, whose business was the creation of beautiful, colorful silk fabrics for kimonos. Mother, who had a keen sense of color, designed the fabrics. She discovered oil painting in her forties and quickly became an accomplished artist. My grandmother wrote haiku and was a master of both sumi calligraphy and the tea ceremony. I have practiced sumi calligraphy and Japanese tea ceremony for years in Japan.
“Your Art is who you are”
“Significance of ordinary life-to be the best you can at being yourself”
After 14 years of being engrossed in painting, these above statements started to make sense to me.
My deeply seeded Japanese culture and spirit of challenge in creativity support my paintings.
Portraits and figures are my favorite subjects, but I also love en plein air landscapes.
My art strives for “peace”, “calm” and “the beauty of an Ordinary Life”
A member of Portrait Society of America, Evergreen Association of Fine Arts, Plein Air Washington Artists
